This is a comment in the form of a question. Just think Jeopardy. Can QMEM run from a flash drive or USB hard drive? If not, then I would like to add that funtionality. I would like to be able to take QMEM anywhere with me for updates, including work. However, I would rather not store my data at a different locations. A flash drive or USB HD install would solve this problem for me. I could then keep data backups on my home system, yet be able to update at work if I want to.

Has the QMEM team, or anyone else tried this yet?

LanMan,

I suspect it will be a while before the basic QMEM program would run strictly from a flash drive. Right now, there are too many Windows hooks to make it an easy process. It takes some development effort and the capability is pretty much in the Open Source world right now.

I do have a couple of suggestions that might work for you. Both involve installing the basic QMEM program on the systems you want to use (primary and notebook, primary and work, etc.). I don't know how this fits with the QMEM license restrictions.

Option 1 (Easy)

Put your .mem files (primary and backup) on a flash drive and always run them from the flash drive and not from either computer hard disc drive. QMEM doesn't really seem to care where the files live. This is a little risky since flash drives can go the way of car keys, check books, and other stuff we tend to 'misplace.' So other backups would be an obvious need.

Option 2 (Better)

Download the new Windows SyncToy program from here ... <url=http://tinyurl.com/7gaf2>http://tinyurl.com/7gaf2</url>

Don't worry about the tinyurl domain ... it just makes the long Microsoft link usable. The SyncToy will keep files on both computers in prefect sync using a flash drive for the transfer process ... and it's freeware.

Concerning security ... If, for example, you don't want to leave the data files on your work computer: simply sync the .mem data files from your primary to the flash drive, sync from the flash drive to your work computer, do the QMEM data updates, sync back to the flash drive, and delete the files from the work computer. Obviously, Microsoft SyncToy needs to be on both computers.

Might be an interesting exercise. ;-)

In theory, you should be able to install almost any application to any accessable drive. In theory...

In real world scenerios, I would not recommend it. Loading and unloading files, the Quicken Medical Expense Manager EXE file, and its DLLs and the data file, all at once from a USB drive is potentially slower than generic hard drives.

It is possible, but I would not specifically recommend. The same would go for installing MEM to a Network drive.
